Volkswagen GenFarm: An ecological revolution in agriculture
Volkswagen has introduced the world to its ambitious GenFarm project, which introduces electric tractors to African agriculture. This initiative combines technological innovation with environmental sustainability to modernize farming and create conditions for sustainable development.
Main characteristics of the GenFarm electric tractor
The GenFarm electric tractors are based on the Volkswagen European Innovation Center and their technical features include:
- Power: 20 kW (27 horsepower).
Battery: removable, 32 kWh capacity.
Charging time: minimized due to battery swapping.
Power source: renewable energy systems, including solar panels. These parameters ensure low operating costs and no emissions, making them ideal for use in regions with high costs of traditional fuels and limited infrastructure.
Pilot project in Rouen
The first phase of the project is being implemented in Gashore, Rwanda. Here, Volkswagen has created an e-Hub, an energy center that charges electric tractors using solar energy. The e-Hub also serves as a platform for energy storage, provides farmers' cooperatives with access to clean energy and a space for training and cooperation.
Unique rental system
Volkswagen offers electric tractors under a rental model that includes operator services. This allows farmers to use modern equipment without having to invest heavily in its purchase. This approach promotes more efficient use of resources and increases the availability of equipment for small farms.

Plans for the future
Volkswagen plans to expand the project to other regions of Africa, as well as adapt the technology for use in other countries. This underscores the company's strategic approach to developing sustainable solutions in transportation and agriculture.
The GenFarm project has already established itself as an example of successful innovation in traditional industries, contributing to improving the quality of life in rural areas. The involvement of international partners such as GIZ and government organizations gives hope that these technologies will become widespread.
