Väderstad Wil-Rich XL2 and QX2 Cultivators: New Opportunities for Seedbed Preparation

Väderstad is expanding its offer for Ukrainian farmers in the segment of wide working width pre-seeding cultivators, with a focus on the Wil-Rich XL2 and QX2 models. On the manufacturer’s official website, these machines are positioned as solutions for secondary tillage, creating a high-quality seedbed, mechanical weed control, and incorporating fertilizers or soil herbicides. Väderstad also emphasizes that, for Ukrainian farms, the Wil-Rich XL2 model with a working width of 11.9 m is of particular interest as an option for farms operating tractors in the 300 - 400 hp range.

Why These Cultivators Matter Right Now

Modern seedbed preparation is no longer just about “loosening the field.” The quality of this pass affects surface leveling, seed placement consistency, stable drill performance at higher speeds, and the early development of the crop. That is why wide-field cultivators are now seen not simply as mechanical tillage tools, but as an important part of the technology behind achieving uniform crop emergence. Väderstad clearly supports this approach by describing the XL2 and QX2 as machines designed to create a smooth, even seedbed ahead of high-speed planting.

This is especially important for Ukrainian farmers working under the pressure of large acreages, tight fieldwork windows, and the high cost of every unnecessary machinery pass. If one unit can prepare the field properly in a single pass, maintain stable working depth, and improve the performance of the next machine in the operation chain, then it is no longer just “another cultivator,” but a real productivity reserve.

Wil-Rich XL2 - Built for Level Fields and Stable Performance

On the official Väderstad page, the Wil-Rich XL2 is presented as a field cultivator for level ground. The core idea of this series is to create a smooth, ready-to-plant seedbed on well-leveled fields. The manufacturer highlights that the XL2 is equipped with a proven level lift hitch, a hitch design that transfers part of the weight to the tractor and ensures stable implement performance during operation. This construction is the fundamental distinction of the XL2.

One of the key features of the XL2 is the split-the-middle shank layout. Its principle is that each following row of shanks works through the center of the untreated strip left by the previous row. In practice, this means more complete and uniform tillage across the full working width. Väderstad directly states that this layout helps avoid untreated zones, reduces the risk of ridging caused by crop residue, and lowers the chance of plugging.

Another strong point of the series is centralized depth adjustment from a single point. On large machines, this is not a minor convenience, but a serious advantage. The wider the implement, the more time-consuming every manual adjustment of separate gauge wheels or sections becomes. Single-point depth control allows operators to adapt the machine more quickly to a specific field or to changing conditions throughout the day.

Väderstad also emphasizes the design of the gauge wheels. The open design of the caster gauge wheels is intended to reduce negative effects on tillage quality, help minimize plugging, and simplify maintenance. For a farm, this means something very practical: more time in the field and less downtime near the workshop.

As for final soil finishing, four rear attachment options are available for the XL2: a 3-bar spring harrow with a round bar basket, a 3-bar spring harrow with a flat bar basket, a 4-bar spring harrow, and a 5-bar spike tooth harrow. This allows the implement to be configured for different soil types, residue volumes, and the desired degree of leveling or clod breakup.

It is also worth noting that in the technical data on the official Väderstad website, the 11XL2 30-39 model is listed with a working width of 11.9 m, a weight of approximately 6,123 kg, and a tractor power requirement of 275 - 350 hp. This clearly explains why the manufacturer specifically highlights this configuration as relevant for Ukrainian farms.

Wil-Rich QX2 - When the Field Is Less Than Perfect

If the XL2 is aimed at level fields, then the QX2 is presented in the Väderstad lineup as a solution for uneven terrain. The manufacturer directly calls it the “ultimate finisher on uneven terrain” and places the main emphasis on its floating hitch - a hitch design that allows the implement to follow field contours more precisely and maintain stable working depth even where there are micro-relief variations.

The hitch type is the key difference between the XL2 and the QX2. For the QX2, a floating A-frame hitch is standard, while certain five-section models with a 4-meter center frame can also be equipped with a T-frame hitch. Väderstad notes that the T-hitch improves maneuverability and provides a tighter turning radius because it has a narrower profile and greater clearance relative to the tractor’s rear wheels.

Like the XL2, the QX2 uses the split-the-middle shank layout, centralized depth adjustment, and the same four finishing attachment options. In other words, the tillage logic of these machines is very similar, but the QX2 is better suited to conditions where it is important to maintain consistent depth across rolling ground, low spots, or uneven terrain.

On the QX2 technical specifications page, Väderstad states that the series also covers a broad range of working widths - from 6.4 to 18.3 m depending on the model. So this is not a narrow niche solution, but a platform that can be selected according to the scale of the farm, the available power units, and the specific field conditions.

What This Means for Ukrainian Farms

In essence, Väderstad offers farmers not just two models, but two approaches to seedbed preparation. If a farm mainly works on leveled fields and prioritizes stable field preparation for high-speed planting, then the XL2 looks like the logical choice. If the terrain is more complex and contour-following performance matters more, then the QX2 becomes the more suitable option.

Both series are interesting because they combine agronomic logic with practical field efficiency. Mechanical weed control, incorporation of herbicides and fertilizers, creation of a uniform seedbed, and work at wide operating widths - all of this meets today’s requirements for effective pre-seeding cultivation. Most importantly, these are not abstract promises, but machines with a clearly described engineering philosophy.

Where to Find Spare Parts for Tillage Equipment in Ukraine

For any tillage machine, not only field performance matters, but also timely access to wear parts and spare parts. That is why Ukrainian farms should think ahead about service and component supply.

Spare parts for tillage equipment of various brands can be purchased from BAS-Agro LLC, Cherkasy, in the following section of the website: https://bas.ua/shop/spare-parts-for-tillage-equipment-000000029-1

This is convenient for farms working with cultivators, harrows, and other tillage equipment that want a reliable source of components without unnecessary delays during the season.

The Väderstad Wil-Rich XL2 and QX2 cultivators are a good example of how one technological platform can be adapted for different field scenarios. The XL2 is more focused on level fields and the classic stability of a level lift hitch, while the QX2 reveals its strengths on uneven terrain thanks to its floating hitch. In both cases, the manufacturer is clearly focused on uniform tillage, precise depth control, a quality seedbed, and strong readiness for work in large farming operations.
