Tensioning and Drive Sprockets for Header Gathering Chains

Gathering chains operate directly in the crop-engaging and feeding area, so the condition of their drive components is essential for reliable header operation. A worn sprocket can cause uneven chain movement, jerking, increased noise, accelerated chain elongation and even chain derailment under load.

BAS-Agro Group LLC supplies tensioning and drive sprockets for gathering chains used on headers from various manufacturers. We keep a selection of frequently requested parts in stock. Components that are temporarily unavailable can be ordered or manufactured according to the design specifications of a particular assembly.

What is the difference between drive and tensioning sprockets?

Despite their similar appearance, drive and tensioning sprockets perform different functions.

A drive sprocket transfers torque to the gathering chain and sets it in motion. It operates continuously under load, so the accuracy of the tooth profile, compatibility with the chain pitch, material quality and heat treatment directly affect the service life of the entire mechanism.

A tensioning sprocket maintains the correct chain position, guides its movement and participates in tension adjustment. In many header designs, it is installed at the front of the gathering unit and operates together with the tensioning mechanism. During maintenance, it is important to inspect not only the teeth but also the bearing, shaft, fasteners and the remaining adjustment range of the tensioner.

Drive and guide sprockets perform different tasks within the header mechanism. Therefore, the purpose of the part must be identified accurately before ordering. Incorrect identification can result in purchasing the wrong component and leaving the machine idle during the peak harvesting season.

Sprockets for headers from different manufacturers

The BAS catalogue contains spare parts for headers of various types and designs. Components are available for machinery produced by:

Capello, Case, Claas, CNH, Dominoni, Fantini, Franco Fabril, Geringhoff, John Deere, John Greaves, Olimac, Optigep, Oros, Zaffrani and Ziegler.

The range is not limited to sprockets. The Spare Parts for Headers section also includes chains, shafts, gears, guides, covers, bushings, knives, sections, hubs, supports, bearing housings and other components for agricultural header mechanisms.

To select the correct part, it is advisable to provide the manager with:

  • the header manufacturer and model;
  • the part catalogue number;
  • the number of sprocket teeth;
  • the gathering-chain type and pitch;
  • the main mounting dimensions;
  • a photograph, drawing or sample of the part.

When the exact part number is unknown, our specialists can help identify the component by the machine model, dimensions or a sample of the worn part.

Examples of sprockets for Geringhoff and Ziegler

One of the products available in the catalogue is the Z-10 MS-SC gathering-chain drive sprocket, part number 032030, compatible with Geringhoff headers.

It is important to identify this component correctly: part number 032030 refers specifically to a gathering-chain drive sprocket, not a tensioning sprocket. It transfers rotation and drives the chain within the working mechanism of the header.

The part can be ordered from its dedicated catalogue page: Z-10 MS-SC 032030 sprocket compatible with Geringhoff

Another example is the 12-053725 gathering-chain drive sprocket, also identified by catalogue number 12053725, which is compatible with Ziegler headers.

These products demonstrate our ability to supply the required components for headers from different brands. When a particular sprocket is not listed in the online catalogue, customers can contact our managers to check availability, select a suitable replacement or arrange custom manufacturing.

In-house production of header spare parts

Our in-house manufacturing capacity enables BAS-Agro Group LLC not only to maintain stock of frequently requested components but also to produce the required parts to order.

A short video from our production facility shows the manufacturing process for sprockets compatible with Geringhoff and Ziegler headers: from the initial metal blank to a machined component prepared for the next production stage — heat treatment.

Watch the video showing the production of header sprockets.

Accurate machining of the tooth profile and mounting surfaces is essential. The sprocket must match the chain geometry, fit correctly onto the shaft or axle and interact evenly with the chain links. An incorrect pitch, tooth shape or mounting dimensions can cause accelerated wear, jerking and unstable operation of the mechanism.

After machining, the component is sent for heat treatment. This production stage provides the required properties of the working surfaces and improves the sprocket’s resistance to wear during long-term operation.

When should a sprocket be replaced?

The condition of the gathering-chain drive should be checked before the beginning of the harvesting season and during scheduled header maintenance.

The following signs may indicate that the sprocket needs to be replaced:

  • sharpened or unevenly worn teeth;
  • noticeable deformation of the tooth profile;
  • chain elongation and unstable movement;
  • jerking during operation;
  • lateral chain displacement;
  • increased noise;
  • insufficient remaining tension-adjustment range;
  • damage to the bearing or tensioning-sprocket axle.

Installing a new sprocket on a critically elongated chain can result in accelerated wear of the new component. A similar problem occurs when a new chain is installed on a sprocket with severely worn teeth. The entire assembly should therefore be inspected as a system, including the chain, drive and tensioning sprockets, bearings, guides, axles and tensioning mechanism.

This approach helps prevent repeated repairs and improves header reliability during seasonal fieldwork.

Sprockets from stock and custom manufacturing

BAS-Agro Group LLC supplies tensioning and drive sprockets for gathering chains used on various header models. Frequently requested components may be available from stock, allowing machinery to be prepared quickly for repairs or seasonal maintenance.

When the required part is unavailable, our specialists will assess the possibility of manufacturing it to order. Customers may provide a catalogue number, drawing, main dimensions or a sample of the worn component.

Our in-house production allows us to control the principal manufacturing stages: selection of the blank, machining, formation of the tooth profile, processing of mounting surfaces and preparation of the component for heat treatment.

How to order a gathering-chain sprocket

To purchase a tensioning or drive sprocket, find the required component in the catalogue using its part number or the header manufacturer. When the necessary product is not shown on the website, contact the managers of BAS-Agro Group LLC. We will check warehouse availability, help select the correct part or assess the possibility of manufacturing it to order.
