The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine has implemented the first steps towards a simplified procedure for state registration of plant varieties registered in the European Union and the United States of America.
This initiative opens up new horizons for Ukrainian farmers, allowing them to introduce the latest and most efficient plant varieties to their farms. They can now take advantage of the results of state testing conducted in the EU and the US and have these varieties included in a common catalog of varieties, which guarantees their quality and productivity.
The advantages of the new procedure are obvious. First, it avoids the long and costly waits associated with the examination of varieties at the domestic level. Now Ukrainian farmers can immediately start using varieties that have been tested and confirmed at the international level.
Second, it will allow Ukrainian agricultural enterprises to be one step ahead in the competitive game. The use of advanced plant varieties that have already proven themselves on the international market will help increase yields and product quality.
The founders of the new procedure emphasize its simplicity and efficiency. The applicant submits an application for registration of a new variety, and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy checks whether the variety is available in the general catalog of varieties of the European Union or the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). If the availability is confirmed, the registration is carried out in an extremely short time frame of just 15 days. At the same time, the possibility of refusing to conduct a qualification examination allows for an even faster process.
Of course, the first steps in implementing the new procedure have already been taken. The first 97 crop varieties have been entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties under this simplified procedure. This demonstrates the active interest of farmers in using advanced technologies and genetically improved plant varieties.
This initiative is part of a broader process of harmonizing Ukrainian plant variety and seed protection legislation with the EU norms. It will promote the adoption of best practices and standards that will help the Ukrainian agricultural sector become more competitive on the international market.
Thus, the simplified procedure for state registration of plant varieties registered in the EU and the US opens up new opportunities for Ukrainian farmers. It promotes the effective implementation of advanced technologies and improves the quality and yield of agricultural products. This initiative is an important step towards a modern and competitive Ukrainian agricultural sector in the international market.
