5. EDM Drilling in Brief

EDM drilling relies on a controlled spark discharge between the tubular electrode (typically brass or Cu-W) and the workpiece, both submerged in dielectric fluid (kerosene or special mineral oil). The discharge locally melts and ejects metal, forming a cavity, while the dielectric cools the zone and flushes debris.

I – discharge current, t – pulse duration, ρ – material density, η – process efficiency.

Micro-second pulses create virtually no heat-affected zone; hole accuracy is governed by electrode diameter and wear. Modern CNC machines auto-compensate electrode wear along length and face, holding tolerance within ±2–3 µm.

Safety & Ecology
A sealed tank with filtration minimizes fumes, meeting ISO 14001. Dielectric fluid lasts up to 12 months with regular regeneration.
