KUHN AXIS 25 Review: Three Mineral Fertiliser Spreader Versions

KUHN has introduced the AXIS 25 series of mounted twin-disc mineral fertiliser spreaders, with hopper capacities ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 litres and working widths from 12 to 42 m. The range comprises three versions: AXIS 25 D, AXIS 25 V and AXIS 25 M-EMC. They share the same spreading system but differ in their metering outlet controls and application rate monitoring.

The new series increases metering outlet capacity, retains the CDA lateral distribution system and offers different levels of automation. Users can choose a machine with hydraulic outlet control or a version featuring ISOBUS, section control and independent application rate adjustment for each disc.

How the AXIS 25 D, V and M-EMC Differ

The entry-level AXIS 25 D uses double-acting hydraulic cylinders to operate the metering outlets. Its VARISPREAD 2 system allows the left and right spreading sides to be shut off independently.

On the AXIS 25 V, SpeedServo electric actuators operate the metering outlets. The electronics automatically adjust fertiliser delivery according to forward speed: when speed changes, the DPAE system corrects the flow to maintain the specified application rate per hectare. The machine is ISOBUS-compatible and can be operated through a suitable tractor terminal or a KUHN CCI terminal.

The AXIS 25 M-EMC adds fertiliser flow monitoring. Its EMC system determines delivery from the drive torque of each spreading disc and adjusts the left and right sides independently. Corrections therefore account for actual changes in material flow.

The purpose of the weighing frame depends on the version. On the AXIS 25 V, it can provide weight-based application rate regulation and display the remaining fertiliser quantity. On the M-EMC, application rate regulation is handled by EMC, while weighing allows the operator to monitor the material remaining in the hopper.

Flow Rates up to 675 kg/min and Working Widths up to 42 m

According to KUHN, the outlet opening in the new spreading system has been enlarged by more than 30%. Maximum flow reaches 675 kg/min, or 11.25 kg/s. This figure describes the machine’s throughput capacity; the application rate per hectare depends on the settings, forward speed and working width.

Hopper configurations range from 1,500 to 3,500 litres. The maximum permitted fertiliser payload is 3,500 kg. Both limits must be observed during loading, as equal volumes of different fertilisers can have different weights.

Working width must be selected for the specific fertiliser and the installed disc set. The stated 42 m applies to suitable ammonium nitrate spreading conditions; for urea, the manufacturer specifies up to 36 m. KUHN provides spreading charts and the SpreadSet app to help users configure the machine.

How CDA Shapes Fertiliser Distribution

The CDA system adjusts lateral distribution by changing the point at which fertiliser lands on the rotating disc. This allows the spreader to be adapted to different materials and working widths. On the AXIS 25, the drop point is adjusted manually.

The shape of the metering outlets guides material onto the disc vanes. A slow-running agitator maintains fertiliser flow towards the outlets while handling the granules gently. It rotates at 17 rpm and stops when the metering outlets close, reducing unnecessary agitation.

For the new series, KUHN has also extended the drop-point adjustment range. This provides greater flexibility when adapting the spreading pattern to different fertilisers using one disc set.

Section Control and Field Boundary Spreading

The V and M-EMC versions feature VARISPREAD 18. The system controls application across 18 sections, with nine on each side, by progressively changing the metering outlet opening. This approach reduces delivery in overlapping areas and when working through wedge-shaped parts of a field.

VARISPREAD 18 operates by changing the quantity of material delivered. It should be distinguished from VARISPREAD PRO on larger AXIS spreaders, where control also includes adjustment of the drop point onto the disc.

ISOBUS versions include OPTIPOINT. This function determines the opening and closing points for the metering outlets at headlands, taking fertiliser type and forward speed into account. When used with GPS control, it helps coordinate the start and end of application with the granules’ spreading trajectory.

For boundary spreading, KUHN offers TELIMAT X and GSE X deflectors. Their settings allow operators to select a spreading mode that balances fertilising the field edge with limiting granules travelling beyond the boundary. GSE X is also suitable for band application in vegetable production and other high-value crops, allowing fertiliser distribution in wheel tracks to be avoided.

A folding ladder provides access to the hopper. Equipment listed for the series also includes a multi-position cover, wheels for moving the detached machine and lighting for work after dark.

KUHN Fertiliser Spreader Parts from Bas-Agro

Parts for KUHN mineral fertiliser spreaders can be ordered and purchased on the Bas-Agro LLC website in the KUHN-compatible parts section. The catalogue includes spreading vane sets. Parts are selected by machine model and part number; compatibility with a specific AXIS 25 version must be checked when ordering.

Bas-Agro LLC also manufactures custom parts from a sample, drawing or part number, subject to agreement on the technical requirements. We ship parts throughout Ukraine.
