Repair of Machine Tool Spindles

Repair of Machine Tool Spindles
31.07.2026

Restoration of Machine-Tool Spindle Bearing Seats by Laser Cladding

Wear of spindle seating surfaces can cause excessive play, misalignment, increased vibration and reduced machine-tool accuracy. In such cases, replacing the entire spindle is not always the only solution. Provided that the component remains repairable, its working surfaces can be restored by laser cladding followed by precision machining.

Bas-Agro Group LLC repairs machine-tool spindles, shafts and other critical components of industrial equipment. One of the company’s areas of expertise is restoring worn bearing seats, shaft journals and cylindrical surfaces that must be returned to their specified diameter to ensure the accurate installation of bearings, bushings, gears, couplings and other components.

How a worn spindle seat is restored

Before the repair begins, specialists assess the condition of the spindle, the nature of the wear and whether the component can be restored. Particular attention is paid to the geometry of the seating surface, the amount of wear and the presence of scoring, corrosion, local damage or signs that a bearing has rotated on the shaft.

The damaged area is prepared for cladding, after which metal is deposited onto the surface in controlled layers. The laser beam creates a localised heat-affected zone in which the cladding material bonds with the base metal. Thanks to controlled heat input, the technology makes it possible to restore specific areas without excessively heating the entire spindle.

Laser cladding leaves a machining allowance on the restored surface. This allowance is required for subsequent turning, grinding or another finishing operation. The seating surface is then machined to the dimensions specified in the drawing, the customer’s technical requirements or the parameters of the mating component.

The repair process therefore involves not only depositing a new layer of metal, but also a complete set of operations aimed at restoring the spindle’s working geometry.

Advantages of laser cladding

Laser cladding is particularly suitable for repairing precision and safety-critical components. The technology enables localised material deposition directly onto the worn area without creating an excessive allowance across the entire surface.

The principal advantages of this repair method include:

  • controlled build-up of metal on the damaged surface;
  • a relatively small heat-affected zone;
  • the ability to restore localised defects;
  • reduced volume of subsequent machining;
  • restoration of the seating surface to the required dimensions;
  • preservation of an expensive or technically complex base component.

Repair may be economically justified when manufacturing a new spindle would require substantial expenditure, cause prolonged equipment downtime or involve difficulties in sourcing a suitable replacement.

Repair of spindles and long shafts

The production capabilities of Bas-Agro Group LLC are not limited to compact components. The company has the technical capacity to work with long shafts measuring more than 3 metres in length.

This makes it possible to repair shafts used in industrial machinery, machine tools and agricultural equipment, including the restoration of:

  • bearing seats;
  • shaft journals;
  • cylindrical working surfaces;
  • worn areas beneath bushings, couplings or hubs;
  • localised surface damage;
  • individual sections of long spindles and drive shafts.

The ability to process long components is particularly important for companies where the removal, transportation and replacement of a large shaft involve significant costs. Restoring the existing component can shorten repair times and return the equipment to service without manufacturing a complete replacement.

Example of machine-tool spindle restoration

An example of restoring a worn spindle seat by laser cladding can be viewed in this short video: https://youtube.com/shorts/a2ZLlKq2izc

The video shows the restored spindle section after the required technological operations have been completed. This example demonstrates the possibility of locally rebuilding the metal surface and preparing it for subsequent precision machining.

Order spindle or shaft restoration

Bas-Agro Group LLC accepts orders for the repair of spindles, long shafts and other metal components. Work can be performed according to a drawing, technical specification or supplied sample.

For a preliminary repair assessment, it is advisable to provide photographs of the damaged component, its main dimensions, the total shaft length, the diameter of the worn seating surface and information about the nature of the damage.
