Review of the Pöttinger AEROSEM M Seed Drill: A New Mounted Pneumatic Machine for Precision Seeding

Pöttinger has expanded its range of seeding equipment with the new AEROSEM M mounted pneumatic seed drill. This machine combines conventional cereal seeding, the possibility of precision maize seeding, and the ability to work with different seed or fertilizer components. This is the core idea behind the new generation: one seed drill should perform more agronomic tasks without compromising seed placement accuracy.

According to Landtechnik Schweiz, Pöttinger positions the AEROSEM M as a new mounted pneumatic seed drill that can work with a double hopper or a precision metering system for modern crop production approaches. The publication also highlights the Intelligent Distribution System, different hopper options, Precision Combi Seeding technology, and upgraded Dual Disc double-disc coulters.

The AEROSEM M concept: versatility instead of narrow specialization

The AEROSEM M belongs to the category of mounted pneumatic seed drills. Officially, Pöttinger describes it as a machine with a working width from 3.00 to 4.00 m, designed for high output, precise seed placement, and a wide range of applications. In its basic concept, this is not simply a seed drill for cereals, but a universal platform that can be adapted to different seeding technologies.

The key element is the combination of pneumatic seed transport, precise metering, a distribution head, and a coulter bar with DUAL DISC double-disc coulters. This architecture makes it possible to work with small seeds as well as with crops where stable depth control and uniform placement in the row are especially important.

For farms, this means an important practical advantage: one machine can be used not only for conventional cereal seeding, but also for technologies involving simultaneous fertilizer application, companion crop seeding, or precision maize seeding in the appropriate configuration.

Model range and main technical specifications

The official Pöttinger page lists three AEROSEM M models: 3000 DD, 3500 DD, and 4000 DD. They differ in working width, transport width, number of rows, and weight, but all have the same standard seed hopper capacity of 1250 l.

ModelWorking widthHopper capacityRow spacingNumber of rowsCoulter pressureWeight with Dual Disc

AEROSEM M 3500 DD3.5 m1250 l12.5 or 15 cm28 or 24 pcs.60 kg1445 kg
AEROSEM M 4000 DD4 m1250 l12.5 or 15 cm32 or 26 pcs.60 kg1855 kg

According to official data, the fan drive requires a minimum oil flow of 35 l/min, while the PCS drive requires 25 l/min. The distance between the front and rear rows of coulters is 30 cm for all three models.

These parameters are important not only for catalogue comparison. They determine the seed drill’s compatibility with the tractor, hydraulic system requirements, the possibility of aggregation with soil cultivation machines, and the behavior of the unit in the field. For example, the 1855 kg weight of the AEROSEM M 4000 DD requires careful assessment of the tractor linkage capacity and ballast, especially when the machine is used in combination with an active soil cultivation implement.

Hoppers: standard, PCS, and double-hopper versions

In its standard version, the AEROSEM M has a 1250 l hopper. According to Pöttinger, it can be increased by another 600 l. In this configuration, an injector metering system is used to ensure a stable material flow even under challenging working conditions.

A separate direction is the version with PRECISION COMBI SEEDING, or PCS. In this version, the hopper is supplemented with precision metering elements for maize seeding. The standard capacity in the PCS configuration is 450 l for maize, namely 2 x 225 l, and 800 l for fertilizer. With the optional extension, the capacity increases to 650 l for maize, namely 2 x 325 l, and 1200 l for fertilizer.

The third option is a double hopper with a pressurized system for single-shoot seeding. It is divided in a 60:40 ratio and has a separate metering unit for each section. This makes it possible to work with different components: seeds of different sizes, granulated fertilizers, or companion crops. The total volume of this double hopper is 2000 l, and the stated application capacity reaches up to 520 kg/ha.

For modern crop production, this is particularly important. Farms increasingly work not with one product in the hopper, but with complex technological schemes: the main crop plus starter nutrition, a cover crop, a companion component, or a seed mixture. The AEROSEM M in the double-hopper configuration is aimed precisely at such scenarios.

IDS: electronic distribution control

The manufacturer calls IDS - Intelligent Distribution System - one of the central technologies of the new seed drill. According to Pöttinger, the system controls each outlet via a bus, is available as an option, and provides broader possibilities for managing seed tubes and tramlines.

In practice, this means that the seed drill can form tramlines more flexibly, shut off individual rows, and adapt more precisely to the working width of the sprayer or other crop-care machinery. For large farms, contractors, and machinery cooperatives, this function has not only agronomic but also economic importance: fewer overlaps, more accurate tramline organization, and better coordination between seeding operations and subsequent crop protection or fertilizer applications.

The official AEROSEM M page also mentions TRAMLINE ASSIST. This digital tool helps determine the tramline rhythm, row positions, and the number of rows to be switched off, taking into account the width of crop-care implements, track width, and tire width.

DUAL DISC double-disc coulters

The coulter system is one of the key units of any seed drill because it determines depth stability, furrow quality, and seed-to-soil contact. The AEROSEM M uses DUAL DISC double-disc coulters with pressure up to 60 kg. Pöttinger notes that the coulters are easy to adjust, and for maize seeding they have been modified so that, in precision seeding mode, each seed is placed more accurately into the seed furrow. After leaving the coulter tube, the seed is pressed down by a press roller.

Optional harrows then cover the seed with soil. The manufacturer emphasizes that the DUAL DISC system is designed to work even in difficult conditions: on clay soils, with large amounts of crop residues, and at higher working speeds.

For Ukrainian conditions, this is not a minor detail. After maize, sunflower, or catch crops, fields often contain a significant amount of crop residue. If the coulter does not move through such conditions consistently, seeds end up at different depths, emergence becomes uneven, and the crop’s potential decreases from the very beginning. That is why manufacturers are paying more and more attention not only to metering, but also to the mechanics of seed placement and covering.

Agronomic significance: accuracy, mixtures, and starter nutrition

The AEROSEM M is interesting not only as a new model in the Pöttinger catalogue. It reflects a broader trend in the development of seeding technology: a seed drill is no longer just a simple tool for placing seed into the soil. It is becoming a technological platform that must support several processes at the same time.

For cereal crops, the main advantage is uniform seeding, stable depth, and row spacing control at 12.5 or 15 cm. For maize in the PCS configuration, it is important that the machine can operate in precision seeding mode. For farms that use companion crops or combine seeding with fertilizer application, the double hopper with independent metering systems becomes an important feature.

This versatility is especially valuable where the machinery fleet must be used as efficiently as possible. One seed drill can cover a wider range of operations during the season, reducing the need for separate specialized machines. At the same time, a more complex technological configuration requires careful adjustment, correct calibration, and a qualified operator.

The Pöttinger AEROSEM M is not merely an update of a mounted pneumatic seed drill, but an attempt to create a universal platform for precision seeding in different agronomic scenarios. The machine is available in versions with working widths of 3, 3.5, and 4 m, has a standard hopper capacity of 1250 l, row spacing of 12.5 or 15 cm, coulter pressure up to 60 kg, and the ability to work with PCS, IDS, and double-hopper systems in the corresponding configurations.

Its strength lies in the combination of conventional cereal seeding, precision maize seeding, work with fertilizers, and companion crops. For farms seeking to increase the technological flexibility of their seeding campaign, the AEROSEM M may be attractive precisely as a multifunctional tool. However, like any high-tech seed drill, it reveals its full potential only when properly configured, adjusted, and matched with the tractor, soil cultivation machine, and the entire system of subsequent crop care.
