Monosem NG Plus Review: What Has Changed in the Updated Planting Unit

In precision planting, the result depends on a sequence of small operations: separating a single seed, opening a furrow at the right depth, placing the seed and ensuring good contact with the soil. Monosem has updated the NG Plus planting unit with these tasks in mind. The manufacturer has retained its established double-disc opener and seed metering system while changing the downforce adjustment, access to the mechanisms and configuration options.

The update also makes the range easier to navigate. Instead of separate NG Plus 4 and NG Plus M names, Monosem now offers a single NG Plus range. The Monoshox suspension remains available: it can be selected when ordering the machine or added later.

Adjusting Downforce to Field Conditions

One of the main changes is a new parallel linkage inspired by ValoTerra technology. It incorporates a downforce adjustment mechanism and is compatible with the Monoshox shock-absorbing suspension. Two adjustable springs help keep the planting unit at the intended depth, while Monoshox, when fitted, absorbs impacts and limits vibration on uneven ground.

For growers, the value lies in adapting the unit to the condition of the seedbed. Too much or too little downforce can affect depth consistency, so settings should be checked in the field with soil moisture, density and travel speed in mind. Monosem has also designed the unit for later upgrades if a farm’s working conditions change.

Changes to the Metering Unit and Seed Hopper

Monosem has kept the familiar NG Plus seed metering system but made it easier to access. New ergonomic retaining knobs stay attached when the cover is opened, and the seed disc can be inspected or changed without tools. This is particularly useful when switching crops and checking the disc and seed selection settings.

Depending on the configuration, seed hoppers are available with capacities of 16 or 52 litres. They have hinged lids; Monosem specifically lists a lockable lid for the 52-litre hopper. Another change concerns transport: LED signalling lights are fitted as standard to improve the machine’s visibility on the road. These are road safety lights, not work lights for illuminating the planting unit in the field.

How the Unit Forms the Furrow

The NG Plus system continues to use two 380 mm opener discs. They open the furrow to a depth set by the gauge wheels, while a tip shapes its base for seed placement. Monosem offers different tips for different planting conditions, and they can be changed without tools.

One available option is the Monocarb carbide tip. It forms a V-shaped furrow and is designed for greater wear resistance. According to Monosem, its service life can be up to eight times longer. Monocarb is a configuration option; its inclusion in the product range does not mean every NG Plus unit is fitted with it.

NG Plus Configurations and Choosing a Machine

According to Monosem’s current specifications, NG Plus / NG Plus E planters are offered in configurations with 4 to 16 rows and row spacing from 37.5 to 80 cm. Mechanical and electric drives are available. The unit can be used to plant crops including maize, sunflower, sugar beet, rapeseed, beans, soybeans and sorghum. Fertiliser and microgranule application capabilities depend on the equipment fitted to the particular planter.

The updated NG Plus builds on a familiar precision planting system while offering more ways to adjust and upgrade the unit over its working life. Monosem began accepting orders for the new generation on 1 July 2026. When choosing a machine, it is worth confirming the full specification, including the drive type, Monoshox suspension, PRO wheel, tips and application equipment. These features should not be assumed to be standard on every version.
