LEMKEN Onyx: Deep Loosening and Roller Action in One Implement

After a subsoiler passes through a field, the condition of the surface depends on the finishing tools. The tines break up compacted layers and lift the soil, while the rear roller crushes clods, levels the surface and reconsolidates the loosened ground. The LEMKEN Onyx combines these operations in a single implement with hydraulic depth adjustment and interchangeable rollers.

The range comprises two models: the Onyx MR/300 with a nominal working width of 3 m and the Onyx MR/400 with a working width of 4 m. Both operate at depths of up to 60 cm. The cultivation effect depends on the equipment fitted: OM tools provide loosening with mixing, while OL tools break up deeper compaction. Finishing is carried out by either the DSW 580 double spiked roller or the RSW 600 tube bar roller.

Two Models with a Rigid Frame

The Onyx MR/300 and MR/400 feature a welded rigid frame. The three-metre model carries seven tines, while the four-metre version has nine. The working tools are arranged symmetrically to help prevent side draught.

Underframe clearance is 90 cm, and the two transverse beams are spaced 84 cm apart. This layout provides room for soil and crop residues to pass between the tines. The open arrangement also makes fasteners easier to inspect and components easier to service.

The stated power ranges cover the full range of operating conditions. Tractor selection needs to account for working depth, tool type and field conditions. Weight also varies with configuration, so the actual equipment fitted must be considered when selecting a machine.

OM and OL: The Differences Start with the Tine

OM, or Onyx Mix, tools are designed for working depths of 25–40 cm. The share is mounted on a curved tine with a guide plate. This geometry lifts the soil and mixes it intensively.

In this configuration, the Onyx provides medium-depth loosening with soil movement. Optional 33 cm wings extend the working tool’s zone of action. Two mounting positions are available to suit the working depth.

OL, or Onyx Loosening, tools are intended primarily for depths of 40–60 cm. They feature a straight tine and break up compaction with less soil movement. The share lifts the soil layer, causing cracks to form through the lifting action and the soil’s own weight.

This configuration is used to break up deep compacted layers, including plough pans. Optional 25 cm wings are available for OL tools.

Both share types feature wear-resistant hardfacing as standard. Carbide equipment is available for highly abrasive operating conditions.

The DSW 580 Double Spiked Roller

The DSW 580 allows the soil treatment following the tines to be adjusted. Its front and rear rollers work in sequence, and changing their relative position redistributes the load.

Where stronger initial clod breaking is required, more load can be transferred to the front roller. The rear roller then completes the crumbling process and reconsolidates the loosened surface. Under other conditions, the load can be shifted towards the rear.

The inclination is adjusted using a perforated adjustment link. The distance between the two roller sections can also be changed. These settings allow the intensity of the finishing action to be matched to the soil condition.

The RSW 600 Tube Bar Roller and Changeover System

The second recommended option is the RSW 600 tube bar roller. It levels and reconsolidates the soil after loosening.

The Onyx features a quick-change roller system, allowing the equipment to be changed as soil conditions and cultivation objectives vary. The two basic subsoiler models and the two roller options should be considered separately: working width determines the machine model, while the roller forms part of its configuration.

The basic Onyx configuration is supplied without a roller. When comparing offers, the equipment package therefore needs to be checked alongside the tine type and overload protection system.

How the Roller Maintains Its Position as Depth Changes

The roller is connected to the frame by two links, with a hydraulic depth-adjustment cylinder positioned between them. Parallel guidance maintains the roller’s orientation relative to the surface as tine working depth changes.

This arrangement supports consistent operation across the working width. Depth is adjusted hydraulically from the tractor, making it easier to change the setting during cultivation.

Side plates retain displaced soil within the working width. The soil remains in the rear roller’s path for subsequent levelling and reconsolidation.

Working Tool Protection

The standard protection system uses shear bolts. The Onyx can also be equipped with hydraulic overload protection.

When a tine encounters an obstacle, the hydraulic mechanism allows it to deflect. Once the obstacle has been passed, the mechanism returns the working tool to its set position. The release force is adjustable.

The shear bolts protecting the frame against overload remain in place on the hydraulic version. Hydraulic cylinders therefore do not eliminate the mechanical safety components.

Spare Parts for LEMKEN Machinery and Other Tillage Implements

Subsoiler working tools are in direct contact with the soil, so maintenance requires attention to shares, wings, tine guards and fasteners. Maintaining the geometry of these components is necessary to preserve the intended loosening action.

Bas-Agro LLC manufactures aftermarket replacement parts for agricultural machinery. Components for this brand are available in the dedicated spare parts for LEMKEN machinery section. Selection takes account of the machine model, part number and working tool configuration.

A broader range is available in the spare parts for tillage equipment section. We also accept orders to manufacture components from a sample, drawing or part number. Manufacturing feasibility and technical specifications are agreed for each individual component. We ship orders throughout Ukraine.
