HORSCH MAESTRO AX Review: A Six-Row Precision Planter with AirSpeed

The HORSCH MAESTRO AX is a mounted six-row precision planter that combines a compact layout with pneumatic seed metering using positive pressure. The machine is designed for row spacings of 70, 75 or 80 cm and features the AirSpeed system with electrically driven metering units. Its design allows planting, localised fertiliser application and, with the appropriate equipment, microgranule application in a single pass.

Design and Main Specifications

The MAESTRO AX attaches to the tractor via a three-point linkage. Its short central mounting structure positions the machine close to the tractor, reducing the load’s lever arm relative to the linkage. This arrangement has practical significance for a mounted planter: implement stability requirements depend on both the equipment’s weight and the distance between its centre of gravity and the tractor’s rear axle.

For transport, the two outermost row units retract hydraulically. According to the manufacturer’s technical specifications, the transport width is 3.49 m. This dimension must be considered when planning travel between fields.

ParameterHORSCH MAESTRO 6 AX
Number of rows6
Row spacing70 / 75 / 80 cm
Seed hopper capacity70 litres per row
Fertiliser hopper capacity1,100 litres
Planting depth range1.5–9 cm
Operating speed6–15 km/h
Weight specified by the manufacturer2,170 kg
Tractor power requirement95 kW / 130 hp
Hydraulic oil flow required for the fan drive30 litres/min

Tractor selection must also account for linkage lifting capacity, the load with fully filled hoppers and the need for front ballast. Rated engine power is only one aspect of compatibility.

AirSpeed: Metering and Active Seed Delivery

In the AirSpeed system, positive pressure holds seeds against the holes in the metering disc. They then pass through a singulator that removes doubles. The singulator requires no additional adjustment when changing crops, although the metering disc must be selected for the seed being planted.

After metering, an air stream accelerates each seed and directs it through the delivery tube into the furrow. A catching roller receives the seed and presses it into the soil. The system therefore controls the successive stages of singulation, transport and seed placement.

The electric drive enables independent control of each row unit. It provides the basis for individual row shut-off, automatic SectionControl, VariableRate seeding and tramline management. Sensors in the seed tubes monitor seed passage and transmit information about skips and doubles to the terminal.

HORSCH specifies a maximum operating speed of up to 15 km/h. From an agronomic perspective, speed selection should be based on actual planting depth, row-unit stability and furrow closure quality. Seed monitoring readings should be compared with physical checks of seed placement in the soil.

Row Units and Downforce Adjustment

The MAESTRO AX uses row units developed from the design of larger MAESTRO planters. A double-disc opener creates the furrow, gauge wheels control planting depth, and a pair of V-shaped closing wheels at the rear closes and firms the furrow.

In the standard configuration, mechanical springs on the parallel linkages provide downforce. For the AX, the manufacturer specifies a range of 150–220 kg; hydraulic adjustment and AutoForce are available as optional equipment. AutoForce automatically adjusts downforce as soil conditions change.

Agronomically, downforce should maintain consistent opener penetration without excessive compaction. Insufficient load increases the risk of shallow placement in firm areas, while excessive load can impair soil structure around the seed furrow.

Fertiliser and Microgranule Application

A 1,100-litre fertiliser hopper is available for the MAESTRO AX. Two electric metering units independently supply the left and right halves of the machine, each serving three rows. With this hopper configuration, half-width fertiliser shut-off is standard. Single-disc or double-disc fertiliser openers are available for placement in the soil.

Optional microgranule hoppers hold 18 litres per row unit. Individual electric drives allow row-by-row shut-off. Depending on the equipment configuration, the material is delivered into the seed furrow or spread over the surface using a deflector.

Spare Parts for HORSCH Planters

Spare parts for HORSCH planters can be purchased from Bas-Agro in the “HORSCH-Compatible Spare Parts” section. The catalogue includes parts and components for servicing planting equipment. Selection should be based on the part number and assembly configuration to ensure compatibility with the specific machine.

Practical Significance of the MAESTRO AX

The MAESTRO AX combines a mounted six-row layout, the AirSpeed system and the ability to apply several components locally. Its technical value lies in the combination of individual row control and seed placement monitoring. On the farm, results depend on matching the planter’s equipment to the tractor, soil conditions and crop production system: precise metering must be accompanied by consistent planting depth and effective furrow closure.
