
Gearboxes for Fertilizer Spreaders
A fertilizer spreader gearbox is one of the key drive components responsible for transferring power to the machine’s working mechanisms. It coordinates the rotational speeds of the input and output shafts, changes torque and provides the operating mode specified by the equipment manufacturer. A selection error can result not only in accelerated component wear but also in uneven fertilizer application.
BAS-AGRO GROUP LLC officially supplies Ukraine with gearboxes manufactured by the Turkish company DI-SAN. The manufacturer offers eight DS100–DS107 models for mineral fertilizer spreaders. Each fertilizer spreader gearbox has its own design, gear ratio, power rating, shaft geometry and mounting arrangement. A shared application therefore does not make these products interchangeable.
A correctly selected fertilizer spreader gearbox provides the exact speed range for which the distribution mechanisms of a particular machine were designed. This is important both for mechanical reliability and for uniform fertilizer distribution.
In practical terms, a fertilizer spreader gearbox is part of a complete drive system and cannot be assessed separately from the shafts, clutches and distribution mechanisms connected to it.
How a fertilizer spreader gearbox works
In most drive arrangements, rotation is delivered from the tractor’s power take-off through a PTO driveline. The fertilizer spreader gearbox then transfers it to the working mechanisms at the speed specified by the design of the particular machine. Depending on the model, the transmission may maintain or increase the input speed.
The operation of this mechanism is described by the relationship between power, torque and angular velocity: P = M × ω. At comparable power, an increase in output speed is accompanied by a decrease in available torque. This relationship is clearly visible in the DI-SAN specifications: with input power of 15 hp, versions delivering 540, 675 and 720 rpm have manufacturer-specified output torque values of 189, 151 and 142 Nm respectively.
In other words, a fertilizer spreader gearbox produces the particular balance of speed and torque required by the machine’s kinematic design.
A fertilizer spreader gearbox should therefore never be selected by casing shape alone. An incorrect gear ratio will change the speed of the working mechanisms, while power or torque that does not meet the manufacturer’s requirements will increase the risk of drive overload.
DI-SAN DS100–DS107 model range
The BAS-AGRO catalogue contains eight models that DI-SAN explicitly classifies as gearboxes for fertilizer spreaders. Their principal specifications are presented in the table.
Determining which fertilizer spreader gearbox is required involves more than comparing power ratings. The models differ considerably in rotational speed, weight, oil capacity and connection geometry.

Every value in the table corresponds to the published DI-SAN specifications and the BAS-AGRO product listings. DI-SAN does not specify the weight of DS100, so this figure cannot be reliably copied from a visually similar model.
For this reason, a fertilizer spreader gearbox must be identified by its full set of specifications rather than by a single matching value.
Every fertilizer spreader gearbox in this range must be treated as a distinct technical configuration, even when some of its specifications match those of an adjacent model.
Differences between DS100–DS103
DS100, DS101, DS102 and DS103 offer the same stated alternatives for their principal kinematic characteristics. A fertilizer spreader gearbox in version A operates at a 1:1 ratio and delivers 540 rpm. Version B increases the speed to 675 rpm, while version C raises it to 720 rpm. Input power for all three versions is 15 hp / 11 kW.
Identical gear ratios do not, however, mean that the units are mechanically interchangeable. DS101 weighs 12 kg and holds 0.90 L of oil, whereas DS102 and DS103 hold 0.30 L and weigh 5 and 4.5 kg respectively. DS100 also requires 0.90 L of oil, while its documentation states that dimension L can be produced to order. Each fertilizer spreader gearbox must therefore be checked against the drawing, shaft lengths, mounting points and overall drive arrangement.
Consequently, a fertilizer spreader gearbox should be selected by considering all its kinematic and installation parameters, not because several figures happen to match in a specification table.
Accordingly, every fertilizer spreader gearbox must be compared with the original unit and the machine documentation before installation.
Specific features of DS104–DS107
The DS104 fertilizer spreader gearbox has the highest stated input power among the models designed for 540 rpm: 25 hp / 19 kW. It increases the speed to 720 rpm and has a specified output torque of 232 Nm. This does not mean that DS104 can automatically replace a lower-powered model. Its casing, shafts and mounting points must match the machine.
A fertilizer spreader gearbox with a higher stated power rating is not automatically more suitable if its speed range or connection geometry differs from the original unit.
DS105 maintains a speed of 540 rpm at a 1:1 ratio. DS106 increases it to 720 rpm and has a ratio of 1:1.33. The DS107 fertilizer spreader gearbox is designed for a different speed range: 1,000 rpm at the input and 1,820 rpm at the output. DS107 therefore differs fundamentally from the family designed around an input speed of 540 rpm.
A fertilizer spreader gearbox rated for an input speed of 1,000 rpm must not be installed in a 540 rpm drive without direct approval from the machine manufacturer and verification of the complete kinematic arrangement.
The DS107 fertilizer spreader gearbox should therefore not be treated as a heavy-duty replacement for DS104 or DS106. It is intended for a different operating speed.
How to select a fertilizer spreader gearbox
The exact make and model of the spreader should be the first reference point, rather than the approximate similarity of two machines. A correctly chosen fertilizer spreader gearbox must match both the required operating mode and every connection dimension of the unit being replaced. The correct fertilizer spreader gearbox is the unit that satisfies all of these requirements simultaneously. Before purchasing a fertilizer spreader gearbox, check:
- the identification markings on the removed unit;
- the input speed — 540 or 1,000 rpm;
- the gear ratio and required output speed;
- the manufacturer-specified input power and required torque;
- the number, position and direction of rotation of the output shafts;
- the diameter and spline or keyed connection of each shaft;
- the centre distances and positions of the mounting holes;
- the mounting orientation and access to the oil plugs.
Even a fertilizer spreader gearbox with the correct gear ratio will not fit if the shafts, direction of rotation or mounting points are different.
If the nameplate is missing, the fertilizer spreader gearbox should be identified using its technical drawing and accurate measurements. Useful information includes photographs from every side, shaft and mounting dimensions, and the old gearbox as a physical sample. The tractor model alone is insufficient because the gearbox is installed on the spreader and must primarily match its construction.
A fertilizer spreader gearbox selected from measurements should not be ordered until the critical dimensions and operating speeds have been checked against the manufacturer’s drawing.
Application uniformity depends on more than the gearbox
An uneven spread pattern does not always mean that the fertilizer spreader gearbox is faulty. The cause may be worn or incorrectly positioned disc vanes, material build-up, unequal flow through the metering outlets, incorrect implement height, machine tilt or a rotational speed that does not comply with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Diagnostics should cover the complete drive system. The PTO driveline, safety and friction clutches, bearings, shafts and spreading discs should all be inspected. A new fertilizer spreader gearbox will not correct a misaligned shaft, a jammed working mechanism or continuous overload caused by a faulty adjoining component.
A fertilizer spreader gearbox can only operate correctly when the adjoining drive components rotate freely and remain properly aligned.
If a fertilizer spreader gearbox rotates normally without load but overheats or becomes noisy during application, the cause should be sought not only inside the casing but also in excessive resistance from the adjoining working mechanisms.
Oil, maintenance and warning signs
DI-SAN specifies SAE 90 / SAE 140 for DS100–DS107. The particular viscosity grade must be selected according to the documentation for the installed fertilizer spreader gearbox and the relevant operating conditions. Oil capacities differ significantly: from 0.30 L in DS102, DS103 and DS105 to 2.50 L in DS107. Oil must therefore never be added merely by analogy with another model.
The oil level and absence of leaks should be checked before operation. Humming, knocking, increasing backlash, localised overheating, damaged seals or metallic particles in the oil require the machine to be stopped and inspected. Continuing to operate a defective fertilizer spreader gearbox may damage the shafts, clutches and distribution mechanisms.
After replacement, a fertilizer spreader gearbox must be filled according to the specification of the installed model rather than the capacity of the removed or visually similar unit.
Fertilizer granules and dust should be removed from the casing after application. Many mineral fertilizers are hygroscopic: after absorbing moisture, they form deposits that can accelerate corrosion. During cleaning, a high-pressure water jet should not be aimed directly at gearbox seals or the breather.
