Future Battery Concept by AGCO Power: A Step Toward the Electric Future of Agriculture

The global agricultural industry is entering a new era — the era of electrified machinery. Manufacturers are actively seeking solutions that help farmers reduce fuel costs, minimize emissions, and increase operational efficiency. In this context, AGCO Power presented its groundbreaking innovation — the Future Battery Concept — at Agritechnica 2025 in Hanover.

What Is the Future Battery Concept

The AGCO Power Future Battery Concept is a prototype of a high-performance energy storage system designed specifically for agricultural machinery. According to Kari Aaltonen, Director of Product Development at AGCO Power, an electric drivetrain is the most promising path to zero-emission farming.

Key technical specifications:

  • Capacity: 150 kWh
  • Number of cells: about 1,400
  • Cell chemistry: NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt)
  • Charging time: around 40 minutes via high-power DC fast charging
  • Estimated time to production: 5–7 years

The battery provides enough energy for most common field operations — plowing, cultivating, seeding, or transport tasks. With ultra-fast DC charging, a farmer can resume work in under an hour, even during peak season.

Advantages of Electric Systems for Farmers

AGCO Power highlights several key advantages of electric drivetrains over traditional diesel engines:

  1. Lower operating costs — the electric motor requires minimal maintenance.
  2. Zero emissions — no CO₂ released during operation.
  3. Comfort and silence — reduced noise and vibration, improving operator well-being.
  4. Energy efficiency — electric drives convert more power into work with less energy loss.

The main challenge remains the long working days typical for field operations, which is why AGCO Power continues investing in improved battery chemistry and rapid-charging infrastructure.

Battery vs Hydrogen: AGCO Power’s Position

Although hydrogen technologies are advancing globally, AGCO Power currently sees battery systems as the more practical option for agricultural use.
As Kari Aaltonen notes, producing hydrogen and converting it back into electricity through fuel cells results in significant energy losses. Therefore, NMC-based batteries are today the more efficient choice for machinery where every kilowatt-hour counts.

The company is also testing solid-state batteries, which could increase energy density by 30–40 % and improve safety in the coming years.

Future Battery Concept Within AGCO Power’s Strategy

AGCO Power, part of the AGCO Corporation (which includes brands like Fendt, Valtra, and Massey Ferguson), has decades of experience in diesel engine design. However, the company is now transforming into a multi-energy powertrain provider.
Recent developments include:

CORE80 Engine — an 8-liter, 252 kW diesel engine designed for Fendt 800 Vario Gen5;

Hybrid Power Modules — combining internal combustion and electric propulsion;

Microgrid Systems — self-sustaining energy networks for agricultural enterprises.

This demonstrates AGCO Power’s move toward a comprehensive energy ecosystem, where batteries, diesel, and alternative fuels complement each other for maximum efficiency and sustainability.

Relevance for the Ukrainian Agricultural Market

For Ukraine, such innovations open major opportunities. With rising fuel prices and a national focus on greener farming, electric machinery could become a real driver of profitability.
Ukrainian farmers can already prepare for the shift by:

  • investing in renewable energy sources like solar or wind power;
  • considering future electrification potential when buying new machinery;
  • upgrading implements and attachments, which remain essential regardless of the tractor’s power source.

Spare Parts for Agricultural Machinery from bas.ua

Even as tractors of the future go electric, high-quality spare parts for implements and attachments will remain crucial for farm reliability.
BAS-Agro LLC offers a wide selection of spare parts for agricultural machinery — from seeders to headers of various brands.

At bas.ua you can find:

  • header parts for Geringhoff, Ziegler, Capello;
  • components for seeders by Kuhn, Horsch, Väderstad;
  • spare parts for cultivators, harrows, presses, and other machines;
  • in-house metal part production using advanced CNC, EDM, and gear-cutting equipment.

BAS-Agro not only supplies but also manufactures precision components that meet high durability and accuracy standards. The company is a trusted partner for Ukrainian farmers who want to be ready for the agricultural technology of tomorrow.

The Future Battery Concept from AGCO Power is not just a laboratory experiment — it is a clear direction for the future of agricultural machinery. Within the next 5–7 years, the first production tractors powered entirely by batteries will appear on the market.
For Ukraine, this is an opportunity to embrace energy-efficient, sustainable farming, but success depends not only on technology — it also requires reliable maintenance and a strong supply of parts.

That’s where BAS-Agro bridges tradition and innovation — helping farmers stay productive today while preparing for the electric future of tomorrow.
